Why Crawling Matters: More Than Just a Milestone

Did you know?! Crawling is often seen as a simple milestone, but it is truly one of the most powerful stages in your baby’s development. Each movement contributes to critical skills that support both immediate and lifelong growth.
Did you know?! Crawling is often seen as a simple milestone, but it is truly one of the most powerful stages in your baby’s development. Each movement contributes to critical skills that support both immediate and lifelong growth.

When your child crawls, they are:

  • Developing bilateral coordination by learning to use both sides of the body together for movement, play, and daily activities.

    • Learning to move opposite arms and legs in a specific pattern is SO helpful for coordination later on

  • Strengthening brain connections through the creation of new neural pathways across both hemispheres.

    • The more they practice these contralateral movements the more they will get better at them!

  • Improving depth perception to prepare for safe walking on stairs, uneven surfaces, and other daily environments.

  • Enhancing sensory processing with front-to-back movement that stimulates the vestibular system for balance and stability.

  • Building gross motor skills including motor planning, transitions, postural control, and overall strength—essential foundations for walking and beyond.

Crawling is much more than mobility—it is the groundwork for future success in movement, learning, and coordination and sets your baby up for SO many skills to come later on!
